Why coal-fired power plants should get nuclear-ready?

Another publication on the topic of Coal-to-Nuclear has been released in the journal Energy, co-authored by members of the DEsire project team. Lukasz Bartela and Paweł Gładysz, together with Nils Haneklaus from the Universität für Weiterbildung Krems and Staffan Qvist from Qvist Consulting Limited, dedicated their latest article to justify the preparation of coal-fired power plants for potential transformation towards the implementation of nuclear energy solutions.
Within the published article, the concept of “Coal-to-Nuclear-Readiness” was proposed, which involves classifying coal-fired power plants into readiness classes. This would allow for an initial assessment of the appropriate transformation path. Assessing the readiness of a coal-fired power plant for transformation along the Coal-to-Nuclear pathway can lead to the status of “Nuclear-Ready,” which should serve as an incentive for investors to conduct detailed feasibility analyses.
The approach presented in the article is already being developed by the DEsire team as part of project activities for stakeholders in Poland, as well as in a global context in collaboration with QuantifiedCarbon and the REPOWER COAL project. We encourage you to read the published article and follow the DEsire project website, where the first reports on the discussed topic will soon be available.
