Study visit to Kairos Power

Members of the DEsire team had the great pleasure of attending a meeting with representatives of Kairos Power. The visit to the company’s headquarters located in the city of Alameda, on the San Francisco Bay, was an opportunity to present the DEsire project and learn about the US startup’s extensive R&D facilities. During the visit, Per Peterson, co-founder and director of nuclear energy at Kairos Power, presented the level of progress on the Hermes high-temperature reactor under development, which uses molten fluoride salts and TRISO fuel.

In 2024, Kairos Power signed a contract with Google to deliver reactors reaching a total capacity of 500 MW in systems by the end of 2035. The Hermes reactor is the reference reactor for the DEsire project’s ongoing analyses dedicated to deep retrofits of coal-fired units, i.e. the so-called direct pathway.
