The 25th Jubilee Congress of Thermodynamicists, organized by the Gdansk University of Technology and the Committee on Thermodynamics and Combustion of The Polish Academy of Sciences, was held September 11-14, 2023 in Gdansk, Poland. The Congress of Thermodynamicists is a cyclical conference, initiated in 1957, which brings together scientists and industry representatives.
A poster session was held on September 12, with the participation of representatives of the DEsire project – Dorota Homa, Ph.D., and Jakub Ochmann, M.Sc. Their work was a synthesis of the results obtained during Phase I of the DEsire project.
Dorota Homa, Ph.D.: “Cooperation of a turbine island with a fourth-generation nuclear reactor”.
The poster presents the results of a preliminary analysis of the feasibility of using a Generation IV high-temperature nuclear reactor as a heat source for a 900 MW supercritical coal-fired unit. The analysis is one of the possible potential paths of Coal-to-Nuclear energy transition, involving the conversion of a coal-fired power plant into a nuclear one, with the greatest possible use of existing technical infrastructure.
Jakub Ochmann, M.Sc.: “Analysis of the influence of steam turbine unit performance parameters determined by locational conditions on its performance characteristics.”
The poster presents the results of an evaluation of the locations of existing generating units that could be the subject of a Coal-to-Nuclear decarbonization pathway using high-power nuclear reactors. For the analyzed locations, an analysis was carried out to assess the feasibility of building a nuclear system due to the availability of cooling water. This took into account how the operating condensers are connected.
